Most decaf coffee is an afterthought. The beans are commodity-grade, the decaffeination process uses industrial solvents, and the result ends up on the bottom shelf as something people tolerate rather than enjoy. For a long time, the entire decaf category was treated as a waste stream - what happened to coffee after the “real” coffee drinkers were done with it. Colipse was founded to change that.

The Problem We Were Solving

When Powerbean Coffee LLC set out to build Colipse, the starting point was a simple question: why does decaf have to be bad? The honest answer is that it does not have to be. But the commercial incentives pointed the other way. Most large-scale decaffeination uses methylene chloride as a solvent to strip caffeine from green coffee beans. Methylene chloride is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Group 2A probable carcinogen. It is an industrial chemical with industrial applications. Using it to process coffee that people drink every day was never a decision made with the consumer in mind - it was a cost decision. Beyond the solvent problem, the beans themselves were rarely selected with quality in mind. Specialty-grade Arabica commands a price premium. If the finished product is going to be marketed as a compromise, there is little business reason to source anything better than commodity-grade commodity. The decaf drinker, in this model, was not a customer worth caring about.

What We Set Out to Do

Colipse set out to build the opposite of that. The standard was fixed before a single bag was roasted: solvent-free decaffeination only, specialty-grade beans only, single-origin sourcing only, and roasted to order. None of these were aspirational targets. They were requirements. The goal was not to make a decaf coffee that was acceptable for people who could not drink caffeine. The goal was to make a coffee that was genuinely worth drinking - something a specialty coffee drinker would choose even if caffeine was not a factor.

The Swiss Water® Commitment

The Swiss Water® Process was the only decaffeination method we considered. It removes 99.9% of caffeine using water, time, and a proprietary carbon filter - no solvents, no chemicals that carry carcinogen classifications. The process takes place at a certified facility in British Columbia. It costs more than methylene chloride decaffeination. It is slower. It requires stricter quality inputs because the process reveals rather than masks what is already in the bean. That was not a drawback. That was the point. Choosing Swiss Water® from day one was not a marketing position. It was a commitment that constrained every other decision we made - and made all of them better.

Single-Origin Sourcing and the JUMARP Cooperative

Commodity sourcing produces commodity results. We source our coffee from the JUMARP cooperative in the Yamón District, Amazonas Region of Northern Peru. The farms sit at 1,600 to 1,800 meters above sea level. The coffee is Fair Trade Organic certified, fully washed, and hand-harvested. Single-origin sourcing is not just a branding choice. It means every batch can be traced back to a specific place and a specific group of growers. It means the relationship is ongoing and accountable. Fair Trade Organic certification means growers receive fair prices and meet environmental standards - not as a checkbox, but as a condition of the relationship. The consistency that comes from working with one cooperative, season after season, is what makes quality control possible. We know what the coffee tastes like when it is at its best, and we can hold our sourcing to that standard.

Why Freshness Matters More for Decaf

Roasted-to-order is standard practice for specialty coffee. For decaf, it matters even more. Decaffeination makes coffee beans more porous. That porosity speeds up oxidation. A decaf coffee that has been sitting in a warehouse for weeks is going to taste flat and stale in ways that a comparable regular coffee might not. The window between roast and optimal cup is shorter. Every Colipse bag includes a roast date. We roast when orders come in, at our facility in Oceanside, CA. We ship to all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US military addresses. The logistics are built around getting fresh coffee to the person who ordered it - not around filling warehouses.

Who Colipse Is For

Colipse exists for people who love coffee and have reasons to avoid caffeine. That includes people managing anxiety or cardiac conditions where caffeine is a clinical concern. It includes people who want coffee in the evening without paying for it with three hours of sleep. It includes people who are pregnant or nursing and have made a choice to limit caffeine. It includes people who simply respond badly to caffeine and have accepted that as a fact about themselves. Every one of these people deserves a cup of coffee that is actually good. They should not have to choose between their health and their enjoyment. They should not have to settle for a flat, chemical-tasting cup because the category they are shopping in was built without them in mind. That is the problem Colipse was founded to solve. That is what we are still working on every time we source a new lot, run a new roast, or ship a new order.
